Roy Clark Curriculum

Art, music and physical education are important contributors in developing the “whole child”. Students attend these classes on a three day rotation schedule.

Character Counts is a district-wide program from kindergarten through high school for students and staff. It gives us a common language and encourages outstanding character traits.

A new character trait is introduced each month. The six traits that are emphasized are Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Fairness and Citizenship.  Students are awarded by their peers at our monthly Character Counts Assemblies. 

Character Counts assemblies feature a grade level musical performance, special guest speaker, and many other fun surprises.  

Roy Clark offers an English Learner curriculum to those students for whom English is not a primary language.

Students participate in small group instruction that focuses on the English language.

The Extended Day Program (EDP) provides safe, alternative educational child care, enhancing the child’s extended day. Recognizing the busy lifestyles of today’s family, the district attempts to work in partnership with home and parents by providing before and after school supervision at the school site.

Students identified as gifted/talented are provided an instructional program which supports, enriches and differentiates the regular educational curricula.

Union Intramural Sports provides Union students opportunities to participate in athletics at a recreational level in flag football, basketball, and volleyball.

Students are given opportunities to take an active part in the scientific method through observing, questioning, measuring, discussing, and learning together in the exciting process of science investigations.

Students are able to explore the world around them and make conclusions about their observations through hands on, inquiry based science exploration. The students learn in a collaborative environment, where they work together in groups and share their ideas.

We focus largely on incorporating STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Students enhance their technology skills as they access Project Lead the Way resources through iPads.

Balanced Literacy includes the Reading, Writing, and Word Study components of instruction. Students are challenged to become strong readers, writers, and thinkers as they encounter a variety of literacy experiences.

Teachers model the use of reading and writing strategies using authentic literature during whole group instruction. Students’ reading comprehension and writing proficiency improve as they use these strategies in their independent reading and writing times.

As students spend time reading and writing, teachers meet with small groups and individual students to provide support, teach strategies, and assess progress in reading and writing.

In word study, students learn to spell by practicing word patterns, word families, and word meaning on their appropriate spelling level. Spelling levels are determined by individual spelling assessments. 

Union students at the elementary school level use the outstanding Everyday Mathematics curriculum. The Everyday Math program encourages children to understand why math is important and how they reach their answers using a number of different problem solving methods. 

Students frequently work together in small groups to engage in problem solving and real-world math application scenarios.

Students are challenged to think about the world around them in ways that make them excited to learn. Students are actively engaged in their social studies learning as they participate in hands-on activities, technology infused lessons, and multi-faceted learning experiences that lead to step-by-step discovery.

Special Services provides a Learning Lab environment for special education students and for students needing speech and language or physical and occupational therapy. A school psychologist is available to administer assessments to identify students in need of individual education plans.

A full-time reading teacher is on staff to differentiate instruction for remedial readers and to serve as our school testing coordinator. We are fortunate to have a full-time nurse assigned to our building. She administers medications and screens students’ abilities in vision and hearing.

Technology is an integral part of each elementary classroom. Peters’ students have access to computer labs, mobile laptops and classroom computers. Students have internet privileges under the direct supervision of teachers.

The media center is equipped with computers where children can communicate, research and complete projects. Teachers also utilize a variety of technology tools. Each classroom is equipped with a SMART Board enabling teachers to deliver interactive curriculum lessons. Teachers have iPads that are used to electronically record student assessment data.

Students are actively engaged in their own learning by using a literature based approach. They discover themselves personally relating to the historical figures and events they read about.

Students gather information, examine cause and effect, analyze results of decisions, debate issues and use their imaginations to create innovative and alternative ways solve to problems.
